Why is mental health so important, now more so than ever?
With mental health being an increasingly talked about subject, thanks in part to Ant and Dec pausing Britain’s Got Talent, to launch a mental wellness campaign, as well as social media becoming a great source for quick digestible news, it’s no surprise that concerns are turning to the effects social media has on body image and on people’s mental health. Specifically, young adults who remain impressionable online.
In a recent 2018 survey conducted by the Mental Health Foundation, it was found that in the past year, ‘74% of people have felt so stressed that they have been overwhelmed and unable to cope.’ Additionally, the survey found that 29% of people reported that they had started drinking or increased their drinking, with another 16% of people reporting that their smoking had increased.
A particularly underrepresented group is in males, which many blame the pressure they feel to ‘man up’. At A New You, we’re all about self-confidence and working with our clients; male, female and LGBTQ+ to help them achieve the best version of themselves. That’s why we’re working with ‘Men Talk’, a non-profit organisation, that aims to encourage men to be open about their mental health, through their own podcast series.
So what is mental health?
Mental health can be summarised as emotional, psychological and social well-being. It can affect the way we think, the way we feel and ultimately the way we act. Think about it, when you’re not feeling your absolute best, you don’t want to be around anyone, as you feel vulnerable and as though people are passing judgement. Good mental health remains to be vital at every stage of life, from childhood all the way through to adulthood.
As we age, our mental health can, and will often be challenged by many factors from social, environmental and biological factors. This can cause a difference in one’s behaviour, such as how they react to situations, which can also lead to stress.
How do take care of our mental health?
A good way to start is to start being kind to yourself! It’s easy to always compare your own growth to another’s and rip yourself apart in the process. Sometimes it’s essential to have a check with yourself. Evaluate what is causing you to feel this way and what is important to you, so you can keep on top of your self-care. Even if this means going out with a friend, going for a run or just having a night in.

We have in the past turned down clients or recommended another treatment, due to it just not being right for them, or simply due to the fact that the client did not need the treatment in the first place! As a registered nurse, Jackie and our team of practitioners will always put the patient’s mental health above anything else.
