What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a treatment for the reduction of unwanted hair, designed to penetrate the hair follicle in the growth stage with light energy, destroying it at its root while preserving the surrounding skin. Laser hair removal treatment is suitable for both women and men who have areas of unwanted hair. The hair can be permanently reduced without shaving, or using depilatory creams and epilators. Among the popular areas that men and women have treated are:

  • Face (upper lip, chin, beard);
  • Underarms;
  • Forearms;
  • Chest, back and shoulders;
  • Nipples;
  • Belly button/abdomen;
  • Legs;
  • Bikini line (including more extensive reduction such as ‘Hollywood’, ‘Brazilian’);
  • Intimate areas and buttocks.

Additional Information

Although it is not a legal requirement, A New You is inspected by an independent Laser Protection Advisor (LPA) to ensure the quality and safety of the laser hair removal procedures which we offer.

What can I expect?

A high level of energy is directed onto the area of hair, to arrest the hair follicle in the growing stage. This energy is converted into heat within the hair follicle, and then conducted down the follicle to reach the hair-producing area at the follicle base. The skin is cooled simultaneously to reduce discomfort – some people describe the treatment as feeling like an elastic band being snapped against the skin. It takes a course of treatments to get the best results – usually three to six treatments performed four to six weeks apart, depending on the area being treated. Although laser hair removal is a highly successful treatment for both men and women, it would be unrealistic to guarantee the disappearance of all unwanted hair with laser hair removal (or any other treatment). You may be required to have an additional session for stubborn and fine, sparse hair which may be resistant to treatment. It is not effective on white or grey hair; however, there are other options available. It is not advised to perform laser hair removal on recently sun-tanned skin but to wait for six weeks following the last direct exposure to the sun.
