Sclerotherapy

The removal of Leg Thread Veins

What are thread veins?

Thread veins (or red veins as they are sometimes known) is the common name given to the unsightly purple/red veins underlying the surface of the skin, usually on the legs or face.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment for the removal of thread veins. An irritant solution is injected directly into the vein with a fine needle. This causes an inflammation to the inside of the vein which narrows its diameter, this in turn reduces the blood-flow through the vein until it shrinks down completely. The vein then disperses naturally and is absorbed by the body similar, to the way in which a bruise fades away.

How many treatments will I need?

On average each vein or cluster will need about three treatments for a complete removal, but this number will vary according to the extent of the condition. As the injected solution travels through the vein network, this will mean that not every thread vein in a cluster has to be injected.

How long does a treatment take?

A single sclerotherapy treatment takes between 30 and 60 minutes with an interval between treatments of 4 to 6 weeks.

Is there any pain or discomfort connected with the treatment?

You will experience a mild discomfort rather like an insect bite.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Immediately after the treatment the treated areas can appear red and bumpy with small swellings similar to a nettle rash. This condition usually settles down within 48 hours. It will be necessary to wear support tights for one week for 5 to 7 days after the treatment.

What should I avoid after the treatment?

Vigorous exercise for 24 hours should be avoided. No moisturising creams for one week until the areas treated have settled. No swimming is recommended for one week until the nettle rash appearances has subsided. Exposure to sunbeds should be avoided as these can cause thread veins to appear

Will the thread veins return?

Once the veins in the treated area have been treated they cannot reform. However, if you are prone to this condition new thread veins may occur elsewhere.
