There are many ways to reshape a nose and it is important to have a clear idea of which part of the nose you wish to have altered when considering the rhinoplasty procedure. This can be the most satisfying operation undertaken if you are in the right expert hands. At A New You we take great care in making sure that you have an idea of what your nose reshape would look like and we take photographs prior to your operation and discuss fully the changes you would like to achieve. We can also arrange to use a computer imaging programme to give you an idea of what the end result maybe, although this is no guarantee.
There are four main types of rhinoplasty procedures:
Sometimes it is a combination of these operations that is needed.
This is the most requested procedure for both men and women on the face and usually involves a general anaesthetic and a one night stay in the hospital. It is most important that patients realise that when having the operation that the results are not instance. It can take up to nine months – 1 year before your final result is completed as the nose has got very delicate lining and needs time for the swelling to go down and the skin to retract back over the new shape.
Most of the work for a rhinoplasty can be done internally without a scar however in the case when the nostrils are being reduced in size a small incision needs to be made in the crease of the nose.
Rhinoplasty operation can be performed as an open or closed procedure:
Open – this method of rhinoplasty is when you expose the nasal cavity and is most suitable for people who have previously had a rhinoplasty or if Surgeon needs to have a better idea of what is required to make the alteration. This is a much more accurate approach as the Surgeon can see all of the internal structure of the nose.
Closed – is usually performed for alterations on the bridge or tip of the nose and therefore is a less invasive operation. All the surgery is performed through the opening of the nostrils.
Following the procedure a small splint is applied over the nose between 7-10 days. A small packing material maybe left in the nostrils overnight but removed the following morning on your discharge. We advise patients not to return to work until the splint has been taken off.
Bruising & Swelling
A moderate amount of bruising and swelling is experienced in the first two weeks but Arnica tablets reduce this considerably and should be taken pre operatively and post operatively during this period. It is important to remember that 5% of swelling can persist until 6-9 months after this procedure it is not necessarily visible to other people but the final result is not evident until 9 to 12 months.
Infection
It is highly unlikely that you would get an infection from this type of operation however a course of antibiotics can be given if this was to occur. It is recommended to avoid very dirty or dusty areas after this operation whilst the healing is taking place
Bleeding
In some circumstances you can have a nose bleed following this procedure. It is important not to undertake any strenuous activity or bend excessively as this can cause the nose to bleed in the initial healing stages. If this occurs it is important to let the clinic know who can advise you of what action to take.
You can expect to return to work once the splint is removed however there will be some residual bruising but this can be easily covered with makeup. No sporting activities should be undertaken especially contact sports for up to 6 weeks. The follow up appointments are very important for us to monitor your progress and they are planned at intervals at 3,6 & 9 months.
This is one of the most extremely satisfying operations for both men and women and can improve their self esteem and confidence with having photographs taken, wearing hair at a different style as a result of an improved profile in keeping with your other facial features. It is important to be patient for the end result to be recognized but communicating your required changes to the surgeon is of paramount importance to obtain a satisfying result.
