Both men and women can suffer from large or protruding ears which can cause serious embarrassment and ridicule whilst affecting the person’s confidence and the way they wear their hairstyle.
It is a relatively simple procedure performed under local or general anaesthetic taking approximately one hour to perform. A small incision is made in the crease of the ear and the ear cartilage is adjusted and the ear projection is repositioned. In the case of large ear lobes a small wedge reduction is performed and a piece of skin is removed and restitched.
Bruising & Swelling
A moderate amount of bruising and swelling is experienced during the first two weeks but Arnica tablets reduce this considerably.
Infection
A course of antibiotics are given to prevent this complication and it is recommended to wash hair in the first two weeks daily with an antibacterial shampoo.
Bleeding
In rare instances bleeding can occur under the bandage so any abnormal discomfort or swelling should be reported to the clinic immediately.
Asymmetry (different sizes)
Most people are not completely symmetrical before the operation so there maybe a slight difference even post operatively although in expert hands this is normally not very noticeable afterwards.
Recovery
Post operatively, a turban bandage is worn on the head for a period of 5 – 7 days and the stitches are normally dissolvable. You will be seen at one and two weeks and six weeks at the clinic. You can expect to return to work once the bandage has been removed. In some cases some people can continue to work from home almost immediately.
This is an extremely satisfying and usually successful operation however in rare circumstances the ear can revert to its previous position. It is therefore very important to be in expert hands and follow the post operative advice given which involves wearing a night head band whilst sleeping for 4 – 6 weeks to ensure the ear does not reposition until the scar tissue has formed around the new repositioning.
