Tummy Tuck - Abdominal Reshaping

This common procedure permanently removes slack and loose abdominal skin and stretch marks. Perfect if you've lost a lot of weight or recently given birth, when you might have a lot of spare, wrinkly skin around your abdomen that's impossible to shift through diet and exercise. Having a ‘tummy tuck' will give you a firmer and flatter tummy. A firm new you!

Who is it suitable for?

It's suitable for someone who is close to their ideal weight and who has loose skin and stretch marks that may have occurred following childbirth or after a dramatic loss in weight. It's not suitable for someone who is grossly overweight.  We advise people to lose the weight first to achieve the optimum result.  In some circumstances we can do liposuction first followed by a tummy tuck.

Depending on the severity of the excess skin and fat it may be possible to have a mini tummy tuck. This will be determined at your initial consultation.

You can combine this procedure with liposuction on the waistline to give a more defined and contoured shape.

What to expect

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetist and involves 1-2 nights in hospital after the operation. You will be left with a scar from hip to hip which runs across the pubic bone and can be hidden by your normal underwear.  During the procedure, we may reposition the navel to give a more youthful belly button, and we often have to repair the abdominal muscle which has been damaged by multiple childbirth.

Possible Risks and Side-effects

Infection

We give you antibiotics during the operation and to take home with you following your discharge from the hospital to prevent an infection. You will need weekly visits to A New You to check that your scar is healing correctly.

Bleeding or fluid collection

You may experience a small collection of fluid along the scar line. This normally corrects itself with time. If it doesn't, it can be dealt with at A New You or as an outpatient procedure in hospital.

Sensitivity and numbness

The area being operated on is near many nerve endings so there is nearly always some numbness. It will take time to recover. Your support garment and post-operative massage will help bring normal sensation back faster. In rare cases there can be some isolated permanent loss of sensation.

Recovery

You'll be required to wear a support garment, which is similar to firm control pants, for 4 weeks following the operation. You should take regular gentle exercise and not stay in bed for long periods. You will need to attend A New You within the first 7 days to have a check-up and for the removal of any stitches, although the stitches are mainly self-dissolving.  You must attend the clinic for your after-care appointments which will take place weekly during the first month. You should expect to be off work for 2-3 weeks if you have a full tummy tuck and at least 7-10 days if you have a mini tummy tuck.

Success Rate

This is a very successful operation, and one of the most popular for women.  However, it involves a longer recovery period than  having liposuction on its own.
