TCA Peels

TCA stands for trichloroacetic acid.  A TCA peel is a medium-depth peel which is suitable for pigmented skin, acne and fine lines and wrinkles.  These peels are normally performed once every couple of years as a course, depending on the severity of the skin condition being treated.  At A New You our range of TCA peels involves no more than a couple of days of noticeable peeling after each peel but there won’t be any redness to the skin. These peels are not the same as the ‘chemical peels’ of years ago which resulted in 1-2 weeks of downtime.

Who are they suitable for?

They are suitable for all skin types and can treat the following conditions:

• Facial and body acne
• Facial fine line and wrinkles
• Sun damage
• Age spots on the backs of hands and decolletage

What can I expect?

After an initial consultation you will be given some home preparation products specifically for your skin condition.  This is an extremely important part of the process to ensure that your skin is ready for the application of the peel.  Normally these preparatory products are used for up to 3 weeks prior to the peel.  On the day of the treatment a clear solution is applied to the area being treated and timed.  The area will feel warm initially but it will cool down within a few minutes.

A couple of days after having the peel your skin will feel quite tight.  This is completely normal and is part of the rejuvenating process.

Possible Risks and Side-effects

Hyper-/Hypo-pigmentation

In rare circumstances, and normally when the preparation hasn’t been followed or if the skin has been exposed to the sun too soon after the peel there is a risk of hyper- or hypo-pigmentation. This is a lightening or darkening of the skin.

Recovery

You will leave the clinic with sun protection on and will be told to stay out of the sun and wear sun protection every day throughout the course of the treatments.

You should expect to peel between the third and fifth day.  The peeling will last for approximately 2 days so it’s advisable not to arrange to go to special events during this period.

Success Rate

These courses of peels are designed to give extremely successful rejuvenating results and are not required to be repeated for at least a year.  To maintain the results, it is recommended that you maintain a good skin-care programme which will be discussed at the consultation, and that you return to the clinic for six-monthly assessments.
