What is Sculptra™?

Sculptra, sometimes known as 'the non-surgical facelift', is a collagen stimulator that reduces lines, wrinkles and folds, replacing facial fullness lost during the ageing process.  Sculptra works by stimulating your own facial collagen production to replenish your skin, providing a natural looking result and giving you a fuller, younger looking face.  It works gradually to restore what has been lost and once your treatment plan is complete, the results can last for more than 3 years.

What is different about Sculptra™?

Standard temporary fillers do not provide long-term reduction of wrinkles and creases.  In fact, their results are often short-lived, meaning you may have to return time and time again to treat the same line. Sculptra works gradually to give a natural effect. Usually 2 - 3 treatments are required, and the results become noticeable after approximately 6 weeks.  Bear in mind that some people need more treatments and may take longer to see optimum results.

Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra can last up to 3 years, significantly longer than many other injectable treatments. Unlike some products, no allergy testing is required.  The main ingredient of Sculptra is polylactic acid, used in medicine for over 25 years with an excellent safety profile.

Who is it suitable for?

Sculptra is suitable for both men and women in their 30s who are showing the first signs of ageing, right up to people in their 70s.

What can I expect?

We take a full medical history at your initial consultation.  An effective numbing cream is always applied beforehand and the product is mixed with a numbing solution to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.  It consists of multiple small injections to the face and takes approximately 1-2 hours.

Possible Risks and Side-effects

Redness, bruising and swelling

These side-effects usually resolve within 2-7 days. We recommend a special cream, massaged into the area twice a day, to alleviate the symptoms. Redness around the areas treated can easily be covered with mineral make-up such as Jane Iredale immediately after treatment.

Tenderness and discomfort

This will subside within 24 hours. Taking a couple of Paracetamol will help soothe any immediate discomfort.

Small bumps

Little bumps can be felt under the skin in the areas treated, and may be visible when you press the skin. Massaging post-treatment will disperse these lumps.  This is a very important part of achieving optimum results.

Recovery

It might be advisable not to make plans to go out for social events for 48 hours after having Sculptra so that the swelling and redness can go down.

Success Rate

After your first treatment you may think Sculptra has worked immediately because of the swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute the product.  In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body, you may look the same as you did before your treatment.  Don't worry.  Sculptra takes time to work and the results should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks.  We will review your progress within 4 weeks of your first treatment.  Bear in mind that you might need 2-3 treatments to get optimal results.   Unlike other facial treatments, which require top-ups, Sculptra's results can last 2-3 years, in some cases longer.  Sculptra is a very long-lasting, safe and successful treatment.
