Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

This is the one of the most popular facial procedures. There are many ways to reshape a nose, and it is important to have a clear idea of which part of the nose you wish to have altered. We take photographs prior to your operation and discuss the changes you would like to achieve. We can also use a computer imaging programme to give you an idea of what the end result will be.

There are four main types of rhinoplasty:

• Rhinotip - this involves the tip of the nose, which is made up of soft cartilage and may need reducing in size.
• Rhinoplasty - this deals with the bridge of the nose and profile.
• Septorhinoplasty - involves altering the septum, often performed on a previously broken nose or on people with breathing problems.
• Rhinoplasty Reconstruction - ideal for fixing the damage caused by traumatic accidents, where the nose needs rebuilding, or when the nose has a growth or deformity. Ear cartilage is often used to build the nose back up.

Some people need a combination of these operations.

What can I expect?

Rhinotip is performed as a day-case procedure and in most cases, under a local anaesthetic. Full rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty are performed under a general anaesthetic and involve an overnight stay in the hospital.  A small plaster cast is positioned over the nose and left on for 7-10 days.

Possible Risks and Side Effects

Bruising and swelling

You'll have a moderate amount of bruising and swelling in the first 2 weeks.  Taking Arnica tablets will reduce this considerably. It's a good idea to take them before and after the operation.  5% of swelling can persist for up to 9 months, but might be so slight that only you notice it.

Infection

It is highly unlikely that you'll get an infection from a rhinoplasty but you'll be given a course of antibiotics if so.  We recommend that you avoid very dirty or dusty places while you're recovering.

Bleeding

In some circumstances you can have nose bleeds.  Don't do anything strenuous and don't bend too much, because these types of activity can cause nose bleeds in the early healing stages.

Recovery

It is important to bear in mind that the results are not instant. It can take from 9 months to a year before your final result is completed. The nose has a very delicate lining which takes time to heal so expect some swelling initially for the first 2 weeks. Most rhinoplasties can be performed with no external scarring.

We advise our clients not to return to work until the splint has been taken off, when you'll probably still have some bruising.  You can cover this up with mineral-based make-up.  Avoid sport, especially contact sports, for up to 6 weeks. Your follow-up appointments are vital, and we usually likt to see you to monitor your progress at 3, 6 and 9 months.
