The Ageing Process
However careful you are about your skin it'll be exposed to countless environmental stressors over the years, causing damage that can reach the deepest areas of your skin. Photodamage, or light damage, is caused by the sun. It's the prime cause of the fine lines, wrinkles and age spots that you might already have, or will almost certainly eventually have, on your face.
As you age you're exposed to UVA and UVB rays, which eventually slow the rate of healthy cell growth. Collagen and Elastin break down too and your skin loses its youthful resilience - with fine lines, wrinkles and sagging taking their toll on your appearance. Daily exposure to UV light accelerates the ageing process and can even cause uneven pigmentation so you look patchy.
Signs of sun damage and ageing skin
- Age spots, fine lines, wrinkles
- Rough skin, loose skin
- Red skin, also known as Erythema
- A sallow, dull complexion
- Skin discolouration, also known as Hyperpigmentation
What is the Obagi NuDerm peel?
These peels were developed by Professor Obagi in California, a well known dermatologist, and have been popular for over 20 years. The Obagi system is designed to combat sun damage, ageing skin and loss of collagen and elastin. The treatment transforms your skin at a fundamentally deep cellular level. It addresses the damage caused by the sun and restores your skin cells to health so they're functioning properly.
Who is it suitable for?
This treatment is suitable for both men and women who have mild to severe sun damage, resulting in visible pigmentation on the face. Also, fine to medium depth lines can be treated as well as some looseness of the skin. It can be used as a standalone treatment if you don't want to have surgery.
It's ideal for black or dark skin, which is often a challenge to treat by other means, such as by lasers.
What can I expect?
This prescription-strength system exfoliates gently to leave beautifully healthy, fresh and younger-looking new skin underneath. A blue tinted solution is applied to the skin in a specific dose and frequency, depending on your skin's condition. The solution is left on for a prescribed amount of time, from as little as 1 hour to overnight.
When you leave the clinic, the peel will have already absorbed to the correct level in your skin, and you will be left with a blue tinge which can be covered by make-up. The tinge will disappear in a few days through cleansing with the prescribed Obagi products.
Possible Risks and Side-effects
This is not a home treatment and must be prescribed and applied by a trained and experienced Obagi practitioner to avoid scarring. In rare circumstances you can get some skin discolouration which is also known as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (darkening or lightening of the surrounding skin area). It's essential to use a sunblock to avoid this.
Recovery
The recovery period depends on the strength of the peel used and can vary from 2-7 days. During the recovery time it's normal for the skin to start peeling on the third day, a process that can last up to a week.
Success Rate
This is an extremely successful peel with a high satisfaction rate. It's often used in conjunction with a facelift to improve the texture of the skin. However, if used on its own, it can give the impression of a facelift because you get some tightening of the jowls.
