Ear Correction (Pinnaplasty)

Many men suffer from large or protruding ears, which can cause serious embarrassment and ridicule.  This, in turn, can have a terrible effect on your confidence and self-esteem and even affect how you wear your hair and whether you have your photo taken.

Who is it suitable for?

Men from late teens up to adulthood.

What can I expect?

This is a relatively simple procedure performed under local or general anaesthetic. It takes around an hour to perform. The surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear, scores the cartilage and adjusts the projection so they lie flatter to the head. Large ear lobes are reduced by removing a wedge of flesh, reshaping what remains and restitching the skin.

Possible Risks and Side-effects

Bruising and swelling

You'll experience a moderate amount of bruising and swelling during the first 2 weeks after the procedure.  Taking Arnica tablets as advised will reduce these side-effects considerably.

Infection

We will give you a course of antibiotics to help prevent infections.  We recommended using antibacterial shampoo for at least 2 weeks, following the removal of your bandage.

Bleeding

It is rare, but bleeding can occur under your bandage.  Report any abnormal discomfort or swelling to the clinic straight away.

Asymmetry - different sized ears

Most people are not completely symmetrical before their operation, and a slight difference afterwards is completely normal and natural-looking.

Recovery

You will have to wear a turban-like bandage around the ears for 5-7 days to support the new position of the ear and to help minimise the swelling and bruising.  We'll usually ask to see you at the clinicabout 1, 2 and 6 weeks after your operation.  You can return to work once your bandage has been removed.

Success Rate

This procedure has an extremely high success rate, giving men the confidence to keep their hair cut shorter and to have their photograph taken.
