Pec and Calf Implants
Common in the USA and gaining popularity here, this procedure involves inserting implants to create a more shapely, defined calf.
Who is it suitable for?
This is particularly suitable for women who have been born with very thin calves which don't respond to exercise.
What can I expect?
This operation is performed under general anaesthetic and takes about an hour. An overnight hospital stay is usually required. The implant is inserted behind the knee in the natural crease.
Possible Risks and Side-effects
Bleeding
You may get a small collection of blood forming near the implant. This can show itself as a visible swelling which, most of the time, will correct itself. In the unlikely event that it doesn't, we can remove it for you at the clinic or hospital on a day-case basis.
Hardening (capsular contraction)
Hardening has been greatly reduced by today's revolutionary new implants. The new breed of implants has a textured coating surrounding the silicone shell, reducing the risk of your body rejecting the foreign material. If your calf becomes painful or extremely hard, your implants may have to be removed and replaced. Don't worry - we'll look after you throughout the process.
Infection
Infection is rare but presents as swelling, redness and discomfort at the wound site. It can easily be rectified with a course of antibiotics. We'll give you a supply to take home when you're discharged to help prevent infection.
Discomfort
You will experience some discomfort until your new implants settle in. We'll give you painkillers during your hospital stay and when you're discharged, to help keep it to a minimum.
Recovery
We will probably use dissolving stitches and you'll need to wear a special support garment following the operation for 6 weeks. This is to help your implants settle and minimise bruising and swelling. Don't do anything strenuous for 4-6 weeks. You will need to take the first week off work. We will let you know which activities are safe when we see you for your regular check-ups at 1 and 2 weeks. You will also be offered check-ups, as necessary, at 3, 6 and 9 months.
Success Rate
This procedure will not totally transform the shape of the calves so your expectations need to be realistic of what it is possible to achieve. Saying that, the procedure itself does have a good success rate.
