Breast Reduction
Although large breasts can be admired by men or women who have small breasts, they can cause problems for those ‘gifted’ with them. It could be that they attract unwelcome attention or more importantly that they cause physical discomfort. Breast reduction is a procedure whereby excess tissue and skin are removed and the breasts then reshaped to a more modest size.
Who is it suitable for?
This surgery is suitable for women with larger breasts who:
- Are suffering neck, back or shoulder discomfort or grooves in the shoulders from bra straps
- Feel self-conscious
- Have uneven breasts where one is noticeably larger than the other
- Suffer from excessive sweating, rashes and skin infections under the breasts
- Play sports but aren't able to perform competitively due to their breasts getting in the way
What can I expect?
This operation takes around 3 hours and is performed under a general anaesthetic and involves an overnight stay in hospital. In order to reduce the amount of breast tissue and to uplift and reshape the breasts, the nipple and areola needs to be repositioned to create a natural result.
The main scar is a ‘T’ shape, with a circular scar around the areola and a vertical scar from the nipple to underneath the breast which may join a curved scar in the fold under the breast. In some cases the surgery can be performed without the scar in the breast fold.
Possible Risks and Side Effects
Bruising, swelling and numbness
Following this type of surgery there will be bruising and swelling but this will be helped by the support bandaging. It’s quite normal to experience some numbness for some weeks.
Bleeding
You may need to have drains inserted following the procedure to collect any surplus blood and to prevent post-operative bleeding underneath the scar. If you have any abnormal swelling then you should contact the clinic immediately.
Discomfort
This procedure will be uncomfortable, and you will be given painkillers after the operation. Local anaesthetic may also be applied along the scar lines to help numb the area to aid with post-operative recovery. It’s important to limit your activities following the operation and wear the recommended support bra.
Infection
With any form of surgery that involves some scarring, there is always a risk of infection. Antibiotics will be provided, for you to take following the operation to prevent infection.
Recovery
Following the operation, you should wear a support bra for 4-6 weeks night and day. Heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 2 weeks. Gentle exercise can be resumed after 2-3 weeks. Full sports and strenuous activity can be resumed after about 6 weeks, depending on your recovery. Most of the stitches are dissolvable except the ones around the nipple which may need removing. You will be required to have 2-4 post-operative check-ups to monitor your progress.
Success Rate
This is a highly successful operation with a high satisfaction rate. It can increase self-esteem and eliminate embarrassment in relationships. It can also become easier to find clothes that fit.
